I have recently been bombarded with individuals selling supplements trying to get me to check out their products. They often start by telling me about how much research their products have and what cool effects they can create. As a person who studies health and nutrition on a daily basis I can only imagine the confusion they bring to the average consumer. Let me give you some advise on a few simple questions you should always ask when considering a supplement:
 
  1. Does my body require it to be healthy?
  2. If yes, Can I get the amount I need through proper diet?
 
If your cells require it to be healthy and you cannot get adequate amounts through your diet then you should consider supplementing. There are a plethora of fancy supplements on the market, many of them do some very cool things but it seems to me many of the people selling them are so concerned with some "cool effect" they can create they rarely ever stop to ask if you really need this to be healthy and if you do, can you get the product being sold through proper diet.   
 
There are 3 supplements that I always recommend for everyone, everyday, your whole life. 
 
The first is a high quality fish oil or omega 3 fatty acid. Every cell in your body requires adequate amounts of omega 3's to be healthy and with the western diet most people are drastically deficient in omega 3's. Our ancestors had about a 1:1 omega 6 : omega 3 ration. The average person eating a western diet has a 22:1 ration. Omega 6 FA's are highly inflammatory and this improper ration has lead to many adverse side effects that I will not take the time to get into at this point.
 
The second supplement I recommend is taking a probiotic. To name a couple of reasons why; we now consume about 1 millionth of the bacteria of our ancestors and about 80% of our immune system comes from the bacteria lining the gut. Because of modern antibiotic over use, antibiotics in our foods and modern food processing there is no possible way we can get adequate amounts of bacteria through our food supply.
 
Lastly, I would recommend supplementing a high quality multivitamin/miner. Years of modern agricultural practices have depleted our soil of the nutrients that is required to produce foods with high nutrient content. Your food is only as healthy as the soil in which it was grown and most of our soil in poor health. Always remember that supplements comes from fruits and vegetables, so supplements are added in addition to a diet high in fruits and vegetables and are not meant to replace real food. Any multivitamin/mineral should also be an organic whole food supplement which will be discussed in later bogs.
